Councilman Anthony is a retired Metro Police Captain.  His power point presentation was entitled “ Moving forward”.  Helping him was his liaison Anthony Ruggerio.

Mr. Anthony was a Metro officer for 29 years and two years ago was elected Councilman for Ward 4.  He attended the Citizen’s Police academy and strongly

supports all of our volunteer efforts to make a difference in the Las Vegas Valley.

1- Budget. The City of Las Vegas has over 600,000 residents.  It has 6 Wards (Council people) and a Mayor at Large.  Next week Carolyn Goodman will be sworn

in as the new Mayor replacing her husband Oscar Goodman (due to term limits).  Councilman Anthony indicated his job was divided into three parts:

1- Budget, 2- Downtown, and 3- Ward issues.  In his 2 years he has help trim the budget by $100 million dollars.  No tax increase on its citizens.  Over 600

positions have not been filled.  Services were cut 10%, management took a 25% cut and city employees’ wages were reduced 8%.  The city currently has 2355

employees.  City employees in the second year of the budget had salary reductions and benefit reductions as well.  As the third year approaches the Fire

department still has no agreement on givebacks.  In total he felt the city was in better shape than the County and NLV.

2- Downtown Redevelopment. Thanks’ to Mayor Goodman’s efforts we have the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.  The City donated the land and the Cleveland

Clinic that is world-renowned is coming.  Part of the 62 acres called Symphony Park will have the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.  Opening in 1/12 and

charging reasonable prices for families to enjoy.  The Children’s Museum, Mob Museum (he didn’t vote for), new City Hall $146 million dollars (didn’t vote for).  The

old City Hall is being purchased by Zappos a subsidiary of Amazon.com.  They promise to have 1200-2000 new jobs.  The Lady Luck Hotel becoming a Doubletree

Hotel by CIM.  The revitalization of East Fremont St block by block with new businesses.  Finally the building of the Metro Police headquarters.

3- Ward 4. Councilman is proud of a new Fire station opening 7/25/11 at a cost of $4.5 million dollars. Equestrian trails alignment throughout the ward.  Lone

Mountain trail/bridges.  Cheyenne overlay project.  Continued work on the Las Vegas Technical Center on N. Tenaya.  A business network to help reduce crime,

traffic issues, zoning matters, and small businesses to have access to capital in creating new jobs. It was a fast paced 45-minute presentation that was wrapped

up with questions from CPAAA members.  Thank you Councilman Anthony and all of us wish you continued success in representing Ward 4 Constituents.
