2011 Speakers
BACK
When I was told that Sheriff Gillespie would be our  February speaker,  I though to myself  "Again? we just had him not so long ago".  After verifying
my postings, he was actually here last year, also in February.  Wow !!  Time flies.  Of course it is always an honor and a pleasure to have such bright
and dedicated people as our speaker.  He started his speech by congratulating Sgt. Mike Giddinge and acknowledging  Mike's successor,  Sgt.Sarah
Bradshaw, in his usual very eloquent and well spoken way. He then presented Captain Kirk Primas who from now on will run the newly created Bureau
of Organizational Development. He went on to make a brief exposé on what means a lot to Metro and its officers: keep good quality of life. He said that
his focus this year would be mainly on three areas: reducing fatalities, more awareness on violent crimes and again auto theft. According to him, auto
theft was still high in 2010 (up 10% from 2009) even though overall, it's 64% down from six years ago.  Other important subject was the budget. Less
money is received by his department from Washington DC, from the  State of Nevada and from Clark County. Another challenge he is pursuing is that
he wants everyone from Metro to step up. He pointed out that Metro did very well last year, even with the economy downturn. As he always does,  he
expressed his strong faith in the people of his organization and the volunteers. Here are some numbers that he gave us:
Traffic fatalities down 56%
Homicides down 24%
Robberies down 16%
Burglaries down 9%
Auto theft down 64%
As he put it, Las Vegas is definitely a safer place to live.  Before taking questions,  he announced that Metro will start moving into its new Headquarters
beginning mid July and ending mid November of this year. " No marble floors and no personal bathroom in the Sheriff office" he said, referring to his focus
on saving people's money. Thank you again Sheriff for  a very informational speech and congratulations on a well deserved re-election..
