Assistant Sheriff Ray Flynn |
We finally got to hear from Assistant Sheriff
Ray Flynn. He has been on a
mission in Washington , D.C. for quite a while
attempting to get legislation |
passed as it relates to "D-Block". Assistant
Sheriff Flynn was successful and
he spoke at our April 21st. meeting.
For his persistence of over 2 1/2 |
years he received special recognition by
Sheriff Doug Gillespie. In his presentation he shared the goal of
"D-Block". It is the state -of-the-art use of |
Broadband for communication between Police,
Fire and emergency services. This addition nationwide will provide
over $ 10 Billion dollars in funding. |
Assistant Sheriff Flynn
is a warm and caring individual who made it clear that volunteers
and the graduates of the CPA are respected and needed
more than ever in this
troubled economy. Along with his no mustache look he began his
remarks with the following statistics that can be found in
the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Department's annual report booklet entitled "Success in hard
Times" 2010.
Auto Theft from 2005-2010
down 64% |
Homicide from 2005-2010
down 24% |
Robbery from 2005-2010
down 18% |
Assaults w/ Firearms from
2005-2010 down 36% |
Traffic Fatalities from
2005-2010 down 56%. |
The budget from 2007 to
2012 has been cut 48 million dollars and the Sheriff himself has
taken a 10% pay-cut. |
The reduction in the
budget contained cuts to travel and training, overtime, less police
vehicles and employee |
salary concessions.
Despite a very gloomy economic environment Metro is finally going to
have a goal met since |
1973 in having their very
own Police Headquarters. This planned facility will open in July
2011. In his second |
half of his one hour stay
he answered questions from Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association
membership. |
The 90 plus people in
attendance at the end of the presentation applauded a dedicated
police officer who year |
after year earns our
respect and appreciation. |
